5 mistakes that ruin your Google Play Closed Testing (and how to avoid them)

The most common slip-ups that make your testing not count or cost you testers halfway through.

After helping several devs with Closed Testing, these are the mistakes I see over and over. Avoid them and you save weeks.

1. Using bots or cheap bought testers

The most expensive mistake. Google detects them and can ban your account. Better 12 real than 50 ghosts.

2. Not confirming testers join the group

Signing up isn't joining. If the tester doesn't enter the Google Group, the app won't show up for them to download and it won't count. Confirm one by one.

3. Letting the testing die halfway

People start eager and quit on day 3. Send reminders, follow up. The 14 days have to be sustained.

4. An app whose onboarding blocks the tester

If your app asks for a code, a special account, or something weird on open, the tester stalls and never uses it. Test the flow yourself first as if you were a brand-new tester.

5. No proof of activity

If you don't know who's actually using the app, you can't replace the quitters in time. Ask for a screenshot or video. That way you know who's delivering.

The common thread

All these mistakes share one root: treating Closed Testing as a box-ticking formality instead of getting real people to genuinely use your app. Approach it as the latter and you pass without drama.
